Birthday Reflections

So I turned 26 yesterday and for most of the day I was sober. I actually did it backwards and began drinking at 11 a.m. and continued drinking in class until about 3 when I had downed 1/3 of a nice new shiny bottle of Brandy one of my boys gave me. How messed up is that, who drinks in the middle of class on his birthday (although that was the fastest 3 hours of my life). The rest of the night I spent just drinking soda at the bars we went to.

I also starting thinking some other, depressing thoughts. Now that I'm 26, I'm closer to 30 than I am to 20 that just makes me feel old. It's not that I didn't feel old being the one of the few friends around here with a spouse and now we have a little Rican bun on the way. I think part of the problem is that now I have nothing to look forward to. No birthdays I can circle that mean something that is until 62 when I reach retirement age (although by then it might be 70). I guess I could look forward to 55 when AARP starts sending me shit but that's still almost 30 years away, my kid will be drinking (legally) before that happens. If there are any older readers out there (besides you mom) who can shed some hope on me, please let me know what I have to look forward to now.

Now just imagine how you would have felt starting law school at 27 and coming in already married. Old enough to feel just a little out of touch from all of the 22/23 year olds who had just finished undergrad (or worked for that one whole year after graduating), but not so old that you wanted to hang out with the 40 year old newbies. The key is to act like a 9 year old all the time and then it really doesn't matter how old you really are.
p.s. congrats on the bun!

Thanks for the congrats. At least you got out of here in 2.5 years so you didn't have to worry about "fitting in" for long.

You can run for President when you are 35. Just sayin.

Nooner do you think they would elect this crazy rican for prez? Well I guess so if I get to hire interns whose cell phones would go off at inopportune times.

Dude - don't talk to me about 30. I'm hitting there in a few months. You've got a few more good years in your 20s - party on. I'm gonna keep partying too, only now I'll be the loser old guy instead of the cool party guy.

Life goes on

Bhudda, thanks for the tip I'll keep that in mind along with our spring break '92 memories.

Moral the only reason I went to Lawyering Skillz is that they take attendance and require you to make it up if you don't go so I did the next best thing and got trashed while in class (I told you law school was hard).

Lawyering Skillz Timeline
1. Teacher says happy bday to Gerry. Teacher then mentions that he has neckties older han the birthday boy
2. Gerry says "Don't worry, they're still in style dawg"

3. Teacher: "Did you know its also so and sos bday?
4. Gerry (in a drunken stupeor) says loudly and seriously "Actually yes, I did know that. She's actually in my trial ad class. We're witnesses in the same trial today, but we will be going out afterwards" too funny

Happy Birthday!

Regarding your question:
I'm 33 years old.

Does that answer your question?

Probably not...

I'm still alive and kicking for the most part.

People are like wine. Most get better with age. Be sure to stay in humid dark environments, and you'll do fine. Most importantly, remember to not let your cork dry out.

So don't let my cork dry out got it. Do I need to be kept mostly on my side also?

Gerry,
Congrats!! I think once you have the baby in your life, you'll be too busy to worry about your age. And for the most part, the 30s are good. You just learn to take an asprin before you go to bed, after an evening with alcohol, instead of when you get up in the morning. Sad, but true. I think there's some shrinkage in the blood vessels in the brain or something. Hope this helps, and congrats again. Mary, small group 1

Homer I don't recall my interaction with the teacher to have been that long or that loud. Plus if I remember correctly I drew at least a chuckle from the class when I mentioned that we were going for a drink later ;-)

Hey Gerry, I found this from your facebook page. Happy belated birthday... and don't worry, I'm not much further behind you in age. The big 25 is coming up soon for me. I think that's more of a depressing milestone than 26. But anyway, on to the other surprise I discovered through your post -- you've got a baby on the way?!? So cool! Tell Chris I said hi and congrats! :)
